Healthy and Delicious Masala Chola Recipe

Masala Chola is a popular and delicious dish made in Indian homes. it is made from chickpeas. chickpeas are a very nutritious and a good source of protein. Some people always make it on special occasions but in many places, it is eaten every day. It is cooked in many Indian masalas. You can enjoy it with puri, rice, roti, naan or anything. Let's know how to make it in Indian style:

Ingredients:

1 cup chickpeas 

Water for soaking and cooking

Salt to taste


For the Masala:

  • 2 tbsp oil

  • 1 tsp cumin seeds

  • 1 bay leaf

  • 2 medium onions, finely chopped

  • 1 tsp ginger-garlic paste

  • 2 green chilies, slit 

  • 2 medium tomatoes, finely chopped or pureed

  • 1 tsp turmeric powder

  • 1 tsp red chili powder (adjust to taste)

  • 2 tsp coriander powder

  • 1 tsp cumin powder

  • 1 tsp garam masala

  • 1/2 tsp amchur (dry mango powder) or 1 tbsp lemon juice

  • Salt to taste

  • fresh coriander leaves, for Garnish



Method to make Chola

Prepare the chickpeas:

  • Wash the chickpeas and soak them in water overnight or at least for 8 hours.

  • The next day, drain and wash the soaked chickpeas well.

  • Place the soaked chickpeas in a pressure cooker, add enough water to cover them and a pinch of salt. After the first whistle Cook it for 15-20 minutes (or until soft).

  • If you are using an open pot, cook the chickpeas in boiling water until they are soft, which may take about 60-90 minutes. Keep an eye on the water level and add more water if needed.



Prepare Chola Masala:

  • Heat oil in a large pan on medium flame.

  • When the oil is hot enough, add cumin seeds and bay leaves and fry till the cumin seeds crackle.

  • Now add finely chopped onions and fry till golden brown.

  • Then add ginger-garlic paste and green chilies. Fry for a minute till the raw smell disappears.

  • Add finely chopped tomatoes or pureed tomatoes. Cook till the tomatoes become soft and start separating from the oil.

  • When the tomatoes are cooked well, add all the dry spices like turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, garam masala, and cumin powder. Mix it well and cook for 2-3 minutes till all the spices are well combined with the tomatoes. Add some water so that the masala does not burn.

  • When the masala is cooked well, add cooked chola and mix it well with the masala.

  • Add salt per taste and add about 1 cup of water mix well and let it boil.

  • When it boils, reduce the heat, cover the pot, and cook for 15-20 minutes so that all the flavors mix together.

  • Add dry mango powder, cook for one more minute, and then turn off the gas.

  • Garnish it with fresh coriander leaves. Serve hot.

People usually like to eat chole with bhatura but to make it healthy, you can eat it with rice, roti, or naan. Many people also eat it with raita and salad.
