Healthy and tasty Cholar Dal recipe | Bengali way

Cholar dal is a traditional dish made in Bengal that is very tasty. Gram lentils are called Cholar dal in Bengali. But it is not at all like the usually made chholar dal. This Cholar dal is made by adding coconut. It is made and eaten with great fervor in Bengali homes. It is preferred to eat it with puris. It is also very beneficial for our health because it contains a proper amount of fiber. It is very easy to make. Let's know how Cholar dal can be made easily:


Ingredients

  • 2 bowls washed Bengal gram dal

  • 2 tbsp ghee

  • ¼ bowl coconut, cut into square pieces (2-3 cashews and raisins optional)

  • 5 tbsp mustard oil

  • 4 whole red chillies

  • 3 bay leaves

  • 6 cloves

  • 2 cinnamon sticks

  • 4 small cardamoms

  • 1 tsp cumin seeds

  • 1 inch ginger, finely chopped

  • 6 green chilies slit

  • 15 gms jaggery, crushed

  • 1 tsp turmeric powder

  • Salt to taste

  • Water as required

Method of making Cholar Dal

  • Heat 1 tablespoon ghee in a pan for about a minute. Add coconut pieces and fry till they turn light red, and take them out.

  • Now heat this oil in the pan for about 2 minutes. Add whole chilies, bay leaves, cloves, cinnamon, cardamom, and cumin seeds and stir for a few moments.

  • Now add fried coconut and the remaining ingredients (except water and remaining ghee) and fry for about 2 minutes. Add water and stir once.

  • Cover it and cook on high flame for some time. After this, reduce the flame and cook for 3 more minutes.

  • Take the pan down from the flame and mix the remaining ghee well in the dal and serve hot.
