How to make Desi Indian style Poha

Serving 6 people,   Time: 1/2 hour

Let's take a look on the Ingredients:

  • 3 cups Poha (flattened rice)

  • 3 tablespoons oil (vegetable, sunflower, or peanut oil avoid gee because we make it in a vegan way)

  • 1 1/2 teaspoons mustard seeds

  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds

  • 2 medium onions, finely chopped

  • 4-5 green chilies, slit or chopped (adjust to taste)

  • 2 sprigs of curry leaves

  • 1/2 cup raw peanuts

  • 1 1/2 teaspoons turmeric powder

  • Salt, to taste

  • 2 medium potatoes, peeled and diced into small cubes

  • 1/2 cup fresh coriander leaves, chopped

  • 2-3 tablespoons lemon juice (adjust to taste)

Method of making Poha:

Step 1. Prepare Poha:

  • Take out the poha in a bowl and wash it 2-3 times by adding water. Do not rub the poha too much as it may break. When the poha is clean, add water to it and let it sit for 2-3 minutes, then strain it. Do not keep it in water for too long or else it will get mushy.

  • After straining, shake it once with your hands so that all the poha get separated and keep it aside.

Step 2: Preparation to make Poha

  • Heat oil in a pan. When the oil is heated well, add mustard seeds and cumin seeds to it and let it crackle.

  • After this, add curry leaves to it and cook them. Then add peanuts and fry it.

  • When the peanuts are fried, add onions to them and fry them. When the onions turn golden brown, add small pieces of potatoes to it and cook well in oil.

  • When the potatoes are cooked, add green chilies, turmeric, and salt to it and mix well. Cover the pot and let the spices cook for a while.

  • When all the spices are cooked, add poha to it and mix well. Cover it for a while and cook on low flame. Keep stirring it in between so that it does not burn.

  • When the poha is cooked, add green coriander and lemon juice on top and serve hot.
