Quick and Easy Masala Dosa Recipe

Masala Dosa is a popular dish from South India. Crispy dosa made from fermented rice and lentil batter, stuffed with spicy potato masala. Here is an easy and quick way to make it at home. Let's get started:


Ingredients:

For the Dosa Batter (Shortcut Method):

  • 2 cups rice flour

  • 1/2 cup urad dal flour (or store-bought dosa mix)

  • 1/4 tsp baking soda (optional, for crispiness)

  • 3 cups water (adjust for consistency)

  • Salt to taste

For the Potato Masala:

  • 4 medium potatoes, boiled and mashed

  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced

  • 1 green chili, finely chopped 

  • 1 tsp mustard seeds

  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder

  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds

  • 1/2 tsp ginger, minced

  • 8-10 curry leaves

  • 2 tbsp oil

  • Salt to taste

  • 2 tbsp chopped cilantro (for garnish)

  • Oil For cooking the Dosa

Method of making Masala Dosa:

Step 1. Prepare the batter:

  • In a large bowl, combine rice flour, urad dal flour, and salt. Add water slowly and whisk until you get a smooth, lump-free batter. Leave it aside for 15-20 minutes.

Step 2. Make the potato masala:

  • Heat oil in a pan on medium flame. Add mustard seeds and let them crackle.

  • Next, add cumin seeds, ginger, curry leaves, and green chilies. Saute for a minute.

  • Add chopped onions and fry till golden brown.

  • Then add turmeric powder and mashed potatoes and mix well.

  • Add salt and cook for 3-4 minutes, stirring occasionally. Garnish with chopped coriander and keep aside.

Step 3. Cook the dosa:

  • To make the dosa, heat a non-stick or cast-iron pan on medium flame and lightly grease it with oil.

  • Pour a ladle of batter into the center and spread it in a circular motion to make a thin dosa.

  • Drub oil on the edges. Cook until the bottom is golden and crispy (about 2-3 minutes). Spread potato masala in the center and fold or roll the dosa in half.

  • Serve it hot with coconut chutney, sambar, or tomato chutney.
